Training as a dressmaker

Since 2019, ChildRightNow has been offering tailoring training for girls and women from poor backgrounds in several villages in the Indian state of Odisha. This training enables the trained seamstresses to generate their own income and thus secure a livelihood for themselves and their families.

What we do

The tailoring project focuses on practice and theory taught by qualified tailors.

Classes are held from Monday to Friday in the centre provided by our local project partner. During the six-month training, the girls and women learn skills that enable them to become economically self-sufficient and independent. Special focus is also placed on teaching life skills, personality development and career guidance.

Our local project partner plays an important role in cooperating with the various government schools and the local population. This cooperation enables the trained girls and women to take orders and thereby generate an income to support their families.

Girls and women who have successfully completed the course but are not financially able to afford a sewing machine are given the opportunity to finish orders received at the centre during their free time.

Project goals

  • Empowerment of women and eradication of poverty through skills development and promotion
  • Improving women's standard of living
  • Improving women's employability (wage employment/self-employment) and their ability to adapt to change

Project partner

The project is implemented by our local project partner Anwesana and monitored by ChildRightNow. At least twice a year, a volunteer board member of ChildRightNow inspects the project in India.
