Engaging schools and communities to raise environmental awareness and climate change adaptation in Mayurbhanj

Promoting sustainable agriculture through community and education

The project aims to strengthen environmental awareness and sustainable practices in rural communities. Children and young people in particular are to become agents of change through tree planting and training in order to improve living conditions and protect the environment in the long term.

What we do

The project is being carried out in the rural region of Mayurbhanj (state of Odisha) and is primarily aimed at children, young people and their families. The aim is to create practical environmental awareness by actively involving children in tree planting campaigns. The pupils plant fruit trees on the school grounds and in their neighbourhood, which not only improves the environment but also strengthens the food security of the families. The fruit trees bear fruit after a short time, which also helps to motivate the children. This practical learning should also be transferred to the families so that the entire community benefits from the measures.

The project is accompanied by awareness-raising measures and training on topics such as climate change, waste management and renewable energies. The introduction of sustainable agricultural methods such as agroforestry should improve soil productivity and food security in the long term. Every year, 4,000 fruit trees are to be planted. The children are encouraged to integrate these sustainable practices into their everyday lives and communities. In the long term, the project should lead to an improvement in the quality of life, an increase in agricultural productivity and a reduction in poverty.
