Since the beginning of 2023, we have been supporting the project "Primary Education for Tribal Children" in India together with our partner Sangrami. The children of tribal people in rural areas have hardly any access to education and thus practically no chance of being able to integrate into the world of work and society. The project aims to give the children this chance, to provide them with the necessary knowledge and to give them the opportunity to decide for themselves about their future. In addition, this school makes it possible that the children no longer have to do child labour such as in quarries, agriculture or construction.

What we do

Quality basic education is something that every child should receive, regardless of their family background and the community they belong to. We all strive for education. As education is an integral part of our lives, spreading awareness of education will support the development of the education system and more opportunities for children to learn.

School starts at 10am and lasts until 4pm with an hour for lunch. The children are examined quarterly by local doctors and those who are sick receive free medication. Twice a month the children receive hygiene kits with soaps, hair oil and shampoo) and once a month nutritious snacks. From Monday to Friday, the children receive balanced vegetarian meals at lunchtime, and as morning school is held on Saturday, the school children receive nuts, biscuits and a semolina meal.

The school offers children an atmosphere of joy, love, affection and security. Clean toilets and sanitary facilities are available in the school building to meet the needs of young children. There is also an adequate safe play area outside the school. The necessary play, teaching and learning materials are also available and provided. The government does not provide any support. The school is housed in its own building and comprises classes 1 to 5 with a total enrolment of 50 tribal children. Five qualified and experienced teachers are responsible for the care of the school children. The school children receive primary education in the local language Odia.

Project goals

  • Quality primary education for 50 children
  • Sensitise parents of school children and the rural population to the importance of education
  • Abolition of child labour
  • Increase school attendance
  • Reduce the number of school dropouts
