Health and well-being

Reproductive rights and support for young women

Budget: CHF 10'902

The menstrual hygiene project carried out in 2024 aimed to support 1,089 girls and women in disadvantaged communities and promote their health.

One focus of the project was to raise awareness about the safe use and disposal of menstrual products. Between 28 January and 24 February 2024, education programmes were held in 20 villages, during which 1'604 women were trained. At the same time, 1'710 girls in 20 schools were educated about menstrual hygiene and provided with education kits. These programmes were supported by health personnel from the government of Odisha.

In addition, 300 women in ten regions were trained as leaders who organised the distribution of hygiene products to 9'690 beneficiaries. They also received entrepreneurial training to enable them to continue distributing hygiene products even after the project funding ended. Thanks to a sustainable business model, the women were able to sell hygiene products to around 10'000 women and girls every month.

The success of the project is reflected in a higher school completion rate, less stigmatisation of girls, less school absenteeism and increased self-confidence among the girls. The project will be continued in the long term by involving schools and women, who will continue to promote menstrual hygiene and produce reusable hygiene products.
