Promoting the economic independence of women in rural Odisha, India

In the Balasore region of Odisha, the project aims to support women through technical training and the establishment of small businesses. These measures are intended to contribute to economic stability and improve the living conditions of women and their families.

What we do

The project is aimed at 210 women from self-help groups (SHGs) in Sadar Block, Balasore. These women are to be trained in various handicraft activities and enabled to contribute their skills to home-based businesses. The participants were selected in collaboration with our partner organisation Surakhya, which is already active in the region and supports existing SHGs.

The training programme comprises two phases: In the first phase, business development plans (BDPs) are developed to provide a solid foundation for entrepreneurial activities. This is followed by practical training in specific activities such as spice production, leaf plate production, incense stick production, and the manufacture of paper products and dry food. This gives each participant the opportunity to increase their productivity and create independent sources of income. The organisation also provides support with loans and links to local and national markets.

Project goals

  • Empowering women through technical training for microeconomic enterprises
  • Increasing income security and improving livelihoods for disadvantaged women
  • Promoting education and literacy, especially for women and children
  • Institutional strengthening through support for self-help groups
  • Creating marketing and credit links to secure a sustainable source of income
